Floating away…
The other day I took the afternoon off and spent some time hanging out in a sensory-deprivation float tank.
You step into a shallow puddle of warm, very salty water, close the lid of the pod, and settle back in total darkness.
Time passes.
Quickly. Slowly. It’s hard to tell, as all the usual ways you judge progress are nowhere to be found.
My mind raced and then slowed down, then raced again. I think I fell asleep (something I’m good at) … but can’t be sure.
When I stepped out, about an hour had passed. And I had not only new ideas about various projects but a sense of relaxation as well.
You don’t need to go back to the womb to find time to think. But it’s clear that to find and do Great Work, finding a time and a place to hide out without interruptions is half the battle.

Wow! Thanks for such a concise description of what floating accomplishes. Thanks in particular for drawing attention to the fact that floating facilitates brainstorming and problem-solving. I have the same experience regularly when I float.
This is utterly fantastic! It describes perfectly the way I feel after a nice long bath… Or when I take lunch by myself with only the lake and birds to talk to.
