Three places to find the people you’re looking for
There are two fundamental truths about Great Work that I find hardest to swallow.
- You have to say No to be able to say Yes
- You can’t do it alone. You need support.
Unfortunately…
- I’m a man specializing in trying to say Yes to everything.
- And I’m a man who thinks he can do it all alone.
(Someone once said you teach what you most need to learn).
I’ve recently been expanding my team, difficult as this is for me to let go of control of everything, and I’ve been learning the lessons on how to look creatively for the right, brilliant people.
Here are three places I’ve found:
1. Seth Godin’s summer intern program has sparked a bunch of ideas. His insight? There are huge numbers of hugely talented young people hungry for experience that is challenging, provocative, creative and fun. Seth’s got some smart ideas about 1. how to find these folk and 2. how to keep them engaged once you do find them.
2. Newly arrived immigrants. When I became a Canadian citizen earlier on this year, my swearing-in ceremony was brilliant. 100 or so people. From 70 or so different countries around the world. How truly magnificent. What’s not so magnificent is that many of these people are experienced and trained professionals who are struggling to find work that reflects their talents. Tapping into resources like Skills International has helped me find some wonderful support.
3. The best freelancers in the world seem to hang out at Elance.com. I’m working with Anthony Sorise of Green Sound as part of my Find Your Great Work interview series. He’s my audio engineer and doing a fabulous job at a terrific price. I put the job up on Elance and got a wide range of people bidding for the work, all of whom I’m sure would have been excellent.
