Do you have a Trail Angel?

I spent some of August hiking in Newfoundland, a wonderful, inspiring and exhausting time.

We were walking some of the International Appalachian Trail, and our guide Paul is the champion of the Newfoundland section.  (That’s me looking exhausted with Paul in the photo.)

One of my companions was Joe, a great guy from North Carolina who’d walked the “regular” Appalachian Trail and was now helping forge new paths in the Maritimes.

His walk took him three months and part of what helped him get from one end to the other were “trail angels.”

Trail Angels are good natured souls who showed up on the trail and provided support, nourishment and encouragement.  Sometimes they just left a cooler with beer and pop for people to drink.

It’s one of the truths about Great Work.  You can’t do it by yourself.  You need support.  You need people around you.  And if you’re lucky, you’ll find your own Trail Angels.

(And maybe, you can be someone else’s Trail Angel.  Now that would be cool!)
