Erratics

Ever wondered what a glacial erratic was?  Me either.  But our recent trip to Newfoundland helped clear all that up for me.  They’re enormous boulders dropped by retreating glaciers and left scattered over the landscape.  (That’s Melissa and Marcella from our hike helping provide a little scale).

Three reasons why I love erratics

1. There just something funky about the name

2. It’s a reminder of how big and slow and powerful the cycle of nature is … and a handy reminder that we are but passing shadows here…

3. It’s a reminder that, in pursuing Great Work, you’re never sure what’s going to get in your way.  You can’t plan for erratics.  You just need to expect them and then when they pop up – as they surely will – you need to find a way over, around or under.
