“timidity will do a thousand times more damage…” (Great Work quote)

“Given the same amount of intelligence, timidity will do a thousand times more damage than audacity.”
~ Karl von Clausewitz, 1780 – 1831

As someone holding Canadian, Australian and British citizenships (yes, I’m an international man of mystery) … I was nonetheless engrossed by Barrack Obama’s inauguration.

His speech was typically stirring (and written by a 27 year old to boot), and it brought to mind Obama’s biography The Audacity of Hope.

Audacity is a juicy word, and it’s useful in today’s quote to see its shadow, timidity.

One of the exercises in Find Your Great Work is about asking: what does full commitment look like, and this discussion plays in the same arena.

With this quote, the coaching questions are:

==> Where in your life are you being timid?

==> If you were being audacious – bold, courageous, firm – what would you do differently?

  1. “A lot of times you’re going to get worse before you do get better” (Great Work quote)
  2. “Whether it’s the best of times or the worst of times…” (Great Work quote)
  3. “Wanting it is easy, but trying to be great – well, that’s torturous” (Great Work quote)
  4. “just better than I was yesterday…” (Great Work quote)
  5. “Specialization is for insects” (Great Work quote)
