“just better than I was yesterday…” (Great Work quote)

“You know, I looked at my face in the mirror this morning, and I like being old. My face has more content and when I train in the gym now, I am not training to be strong or handsome – just better than I was yesterday. These days the race is just against myself.”
~ Jean Claude van Damme

Do you know Jean Claude van Damme?  I knew him, as this article says, as the “Euro-trash version” of a Stallone or Schwartzenegger.

But his new film, JCVD, is taking everyone by surprise.  In it he plays a washed up action star, and in a brilliant blending of fact and fiction, he turns in a compelling performance.

This quote is not from the film but from an interview, and it struck a chord with me about how often our focus changes as we grow older, from measuring success  as external glory to listening more carefully to an internal beat.

==> What are you training for?

==> What does “better than yesterday” look like for you?

  1. “Wanting it is easy, but trying to be great – well, that’s torturous” (Great Work quote)
  2. “…scar tissue all over my body…” (Great Work quote)
  3. “You don’t learn by your mistakes…” (Great Work quote)
  4. “timidity will do a thousand times more damage…” (Great Work quote)
  5. “You can’t get to Wonderful without…” (Great Work quote)
