Theories of Everything

You may have run across Roz Chast’s cartoons if you read the New Yorker and any other of the various magazines and newspapers where her work gets published.
I got her compendium, Theories of Everything, for Christmas and it’s quite brilliant: funny as all get out with a point sharp enough to draw blood.
This one is a favourite – it’s the look of stunned stuckness on the man’s face that I love as he sits between his two in-boxes, one labeled “too early to begin working on” and the other “too late to do anything about”.
It’s that sinking feeling of dispair: overwhelmed by Bad and Good Work with no chance of finding what might be Great Work.
What’s the solution to the man’s dilemma?
If this was me, I’d do a number of things on any given day:
- Despair utterly
- Work late
- Shred one of the in-boxes
- Drink another espresso
- Get clear on my Great Work
How about you?
