Great Work Quote #43: “A lot of times you’re going to get worse before you do get better.”
Of course you have to make changes in order to get better. A lot of times you’re going to get worse before you do get better. It’s a matter of other parts of your game trying to pick you up and understanding how to score when you don’t have your best stuff. But you know it’s coming. You have to believe in what you’re doing. And you have to believe in what you’re doing is right, even though people tell you what you’re doing is wrong. I’ve been through that twice and I think I’ve turned out on the good side both times. It’s just that you’re going to get a lot of bombardment, not just from the media but from fans, from friends, family, whatever it may be, they’re going to always doubt and question you. But you’ve got to have the internal resolve to stick with what you believe is going to be right and you’re going to get better.”
~ Tiger Woods
I’m came across this quote from Woods in this article, as he talked about Padrig Harrington’s process for reinventing his golf swing.
Woods has gone through the same process, it’s what Seth Godin talks about in The Dip, and it describes to a tee (yep, pun intended) the challenge of stepping out of the comfort of Good Work towards Great Work.
(No doubt Woods will be thinking about his own words this week when, for the first time, he failed to hold on to a halfway lead at a Masters event. You can’t help but think he’ll bounce back…)
