“You don’t learn by your mistakes…” (Great Work quote)

“That is a really depressing question. I have made so many mistakes, and such really stupid ones, I would start blubbing away if I could remember even half of them. But do not dwell on cock-ups, I say. You don’t learn by your mistakes – at least I don’t – so best to blunder on making fresh ones.”

~ Charles Saatchi in response to the question,
“What was your greatest mistake?”

Broken egg

Charles Saatchi seems to live a good life. Advertising guru, leading figure in the modern art world, married to The Domestic Goddess, quite possibly the 2nd sexiest woman in a kitchen and a fresh-off-the-press author of an autobiography.

The Number One sexiest woman in a kitchen sent me through this interview with Saatchi she’d found on line, and I loved this response to one of those bland and generic interview questions. (It’s almost as good as his response to what he would like his epitaph to be.)

This is right on the Great Work button. Peter Block and Susan Scott, Tom Peters and Seth Godin would all be nodding vigorously in agreement. You need to keep pressing on , finding the edges and making mistakes. That’s where the life is.

  2. “You cannot create experience. You must undergo it” (Great Work quote)
  3. “Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us…” (Great Work quote)
  4. “…when I wanted to say ‘No’ and said ‘Yes.’” (Great Work quote)
  5. “just better than I was yesterday…” (Great Work quote)

  1. Deb Owen says:

The people who ‘win’ more? Fail more. They also try more. Babe Ruth has amazing stats as a baseball player, right? He was also up at bat more often than most players. Take more swings. Go ahead and miss. Learn from it and try again.

    All the best!
