I Can’t Stop Changing All The Time [Great Work Quote]

I still only travel by foot and by foot, it’s a slow climb,
But I’m good at being uncomfortable,
so I can’t stop changing all the time

Fiona Apple, Extraordinary Machine

Who’s good at being uncomfortable?

Not me.

It’s an effort, always, to step up to the thing that’s out there on the boundaries, a little odd, a little challenging, a little unknown.

But if changing means evolving, growing, becoming a better version of me, then I can see that getting uncomfortable  is part of that process.

Where’s the wisdom in this for you, I wonder?

And where’s the next place you’re willing to be uncomfortable?

The wisdom for me is in all the other parallels in life. My muscles atrophy if theyre comfortable for too long. The purpose of comfort is to rest and savor. The pupose of discomfort is to catalyze growth. Maybe both are just sensations which can inform us whether we are in a growth or rest phase.

The next place i am willing to be uncomfortable is to show up and do some un-fun work today, and go at it like my hair is on fire, just ’cause i can.

The wisdom is in what you say is becoming a better version of me. If the push to change has anything to do with outside pressure, then the result is stress. If the push to change is one’s own inner curiousity then the evolution is a pleasurable one. The trick is keep reminding oneself of the difference between the two, especially when one is not self-employed, but works for another.

Hi Michael! This is really one great post which made a greater impact to your readers. I definitely agree with you when you said that if changing means evolving, growing, becoming a better version of me, then getting uncomfortable is part of that process. This is very logical and it makes sense a lot! As Heraclitus quoted centuries ago, the only constant in this world is change. True! And the best thing we can do is adapt to the changes without loosing yourself or what is truly important to you. Thanks for this great reminder and keep your posts coming! :)
