Gabe Zichermann, The Gamification Revolution

Gabe ZichermannIf you’re like me and you’re in the world of learning, development and employee engagement, you’ve probably heard me get excited about the concept of gamification. Well, I’m VERY excited to be talking to Gabe Zichermann today. He’s CEO of Gamification Summit and is truly a thought leader in the concept of gamification. A lot of his thinking is condensed in his latest book, The Gamification Revolution: How Leaders Leverage Game Mechanics to Crush the Opposition. So we’re going to get into all of that with Gabe.

0:02:10: Gabe provides the background on why he decided to try to use game technology and techniques to do more than just entertain, but also to educate and facilitate change. Michael asks Gabe to explain how desire and mastery play into gamification.

0:05:32: Expanding on the idea that gamification works when users have a desire to achieve mastery, Gabe and Michael discuss the fact that mastery is quite different from winning – that it’s more about achieving a sense of progress. Gabe outlines the 3 Fs that feed into good engagement in gamification: feedback, friends and fun.

0:09:33: Michael asks Gabe whether fun is necessarily trivial, and Gabe explains that many people are able to find fun at work.

0:10:07: Gabe expands on the idea of productive fun, outlining how gamification can be used to engage people with their work in a way that motivates and interests them. He uses specific examples, including his favorite – the Domino’s Pizza Hero app. This leads to a discussion of the fact that gamification doesn’t have to be expensive to be effective, and that proper engagement is more important than pricey software.
