What's this about?

Michael Bungay StanierEvery month in The Scribbler I feature two hand-selected articles from writers and thinkers I admire, as well as a short article by me. The articles have a common theme in that they offer insights and tools to help you live a better life. You get a few paragraphs from each of my guest authors' articles, and the link if you'd like to read more.

This month, I've got an eclectic mix of articles from two terrific thinkers. One focuses on how HR can explicitly add to a company's bottom line, while the other explores how to tap into "deep knowing" to live a better life of choice. My short article makes the connection between the Olympics and what it means to be vulnerable.

David Creelman is a world-recognized expert on HR issues (this article, written in English, is from a Romanian website). He's interviewed and written about every single mover and shaker in the HR world, and has recently co-authored a report on Human Capital reporting with David Ullrich, and this article gives five best practices on doing just that.

Jen Louden is better known as The Comfort Queen. She's written numerous books and has appeared on all sorts of TV shows (including the "holy grail", Oprah). I've persuaded her to give us a sneak preview of the book she's currently writing about how we organize our lives by our deepest knowing so that we can balance keeping in touch with our creative desires and our need to be of service in the world with the need to make a living, parent our kids and sweep the floor.

Michael's quick scribble: Love me without pity

The Winter Olympics are on at the moment. For those of you who don't live in Scandinavia, Canada, China and various parts of the former USSR, this is the smaller, colder, slippery version of the other Olympics.

What's breathtaking about the Olympics is seeing men and women perform at the very edge of their abilities. They are being as Great as they can be (I've written previously on what it means to live life on My Olympus here.)

Peter Block talks about assuming the responsibility for our freedom, which I take to mean, in part, living a life that fully uses our gifts. It also means being responsible in holding others to the same bold, terrifying standard.

It's no small thing, and a challenge we all face – whether we're explicitly in the helping services (coaching, therapy, consulting) or implicitly (being a parent, a manager, a human being). It can be so easy to rush in and rescue the people in our lives, keep them safe, keep them from exploring those edges.

This form of infantilization appears to be about keeping them safe, but is more deeply about keeping us safe and keeping us in control. To let that go means increasing our – and their – vulnerability.

Jean Vanier, founder of L'Arche (which provides communities for people with developmental disabilities), said that the greatest gift is to "love me without pity." From this place, greatness is possible.

Who are you keeping from their own greatness by keeping them safe? How could you love them without pity?

(I support an organization in Toronto called On the Move that works with adults with developmental disabilities to be more active members of their community. This is an organization that does Great Work and truly loves its participants "without pity." We're holding a "friend raiser" on April 6th. Free shipping ends on Tuesday

Since we launched Get Unstuck & Get Going in September, we've offered free shipping to our customers around the world.

Canada Post has just increased shipping prices, so now we need to increase ours. This means free shipping will end on February 28th.

So if you've been hesitating about buying something from the Get Unstuck store, now's a great time to act.

The best value is the Get Unstuck & Get Going tool. It's a substantial tool – beautiful, practical... and packed with nuggets of wisdom, powerful questions and a self-coaching process. (Peter Block, the leading management thinker, says "Buy the book, give it to people you care about, and pick it up when you feel lost, which for most of us, is all the time.") Check it out for yourself here.

There are other great products you can buy at the Get Unstuck store – and if you buy before Tuesday, the shipping is free.

"Talking to Wall Street" by David Creelman

For at least a decade HR has been muttering about how it can add value to the bottom line. Now the financial markets are beginning to believe it. This should excite and frighten HR leaders. If Wall Street really does care about HR then the pressure to do great work-and just as importantly, to prove it is doing great work-will be intense.

In the coming years more and more HR leaders will get a call from the CEO saying "We need to prove to Wall Street that we have excellent people management practices. What can you give me?" At this point the HR leader better have a good answer or the CEO is going to be looking for a new head of HR.

"The Deep Knowing Cheat Sheet" by Jennifer "The Comfort Queen" Louden

How do we stand by our deepest knowing and live a life of our choice?

We become curious apprentices of our own lives, willing to keep our eyes open to ourselves even when we would rather shrink away in disgust or hide behind fear.

We listen to the twitch in our back, the pang in our stomach, the depth charge in our headache, the cold we get every time we visit our parents.

We offer ourselves and ask from others the sacrament of forgiveness.

We ask, "What would I be willing to die for?"
