What's this about?

Welcome to the very first edition of The Scribbler,  available only to subscribers of Outside the Lines. Each month I'll hand-select two articles from writers and thinkers that I admire. The articles will have a common theme in that they'll offer insights and tools to help you live a better life. I'll give you the first paragraph of each article, and the link to go to if you'd like to read more.

This month, my two writers are Richard Winfield and Michael Neill.

Richard is the Principal of the Brefi Group, based in the UK. He works with organizations around the world to help individuals and teams become more effective with less stress. He's writing about how you can use scenario planning - a powerful business tool - for the purpose of planning your life.

Michael Neill leads the Genius Catalyst and lives in Hollywood. He helps people live their best lives by doing what they want to do better ... and have some fun in the process. His article, "A Cab Driver Named Adolf", looks at what it means to have a big dream - and to admit it.

Please forward The Scribbler (in its entirety please) to anyone you think might be interested. This community grows with your help.

Scenario planning for coaches

by Richard Winfield

Coaching is about raising awareness and setting goals. I use a very simple but powerful system for scenario planning, which can easily be applied in a coaching situation. It was developed in South Africa and taught to me by Clem Sunter.

Scenario planning is a powerful business tool. Using scenarios equips people to think constructively about the future and to plan for it. It is not about planning for one set of events (which almost certainly won't happen), but for setting up systems for monitoring what actually does happen in such a way that the individual or organisation is able to appreciate and respond effectively to changes as they evolve.

A Cab Driver Named Adolf

by Michael Neill

His name was Adolf, and he came from Ghana. He had come to America in 1991 to make his fortune and take care of his family. Thirteen years later, he was driving a borrowed cab seven days a week, three hundred and sixty five days a year. The money sent home each month enabled his family to live well. His mother owned her own home; his brother and sister were able to finish the equivalent of high school. But Adolf had not been back.

"I don't have a dream," he said firmly.

"I don't believe you," I replied, equally firmly.

Michael's quick scribble

Part of the joy of setting up The Scribbler for me is the opportunity to collaborate with people I respect and admire. The web has created an unparalleled opportunity for this to happen. One of the most stunning examples is www.wikipedia.com - an online encyclopaedia that is becoming "the Google" of its genre. Number of collaborators: tens of thousands. Number of full-time employees: one.

So who do you dream of collaborating with? And why aren't you reaching out to make the connection?
